Intro

The weather is changing, and summer is around the corner, this means it's s’mores season. Now it's important that buying outdoor gear for your camping trip should be set as the highest priority.

Roasting marshmallows over the fire should trigger some fond childhood memories, after all the tasty desert has its own national s’mores day on the 10th of August.
In the following guide we will speak about what you can do to improve your s’mores making abilities and offer some new tasty recipes to get you even more excited for your camping trip.

You might like it so much that every day becomes the 10th of August and camping in your backyard looks oh so inviting.

So, let's roll back the curtain and begin!

S’mores Roasting Forks

There’s nothing worse than preparing to make some s’mores with friends only to realize you don’t have anything to hold the marshmallows over the fire with. Part of the idea of camping is using the outdoors and finding a stick to poke through your marshmallow.

But let’s honestly reflect and ask ourselves, how often do we actually have time to do that?
More than likely we find a stick that’s short and possibly covered in sand. What makes matters worse is we probably get our hand so close to the fire in order to make our delicious treat that we burn in the process.

For our keen inventors out there you’ve probably thought about using a clothes hanger... well just make sure it's not a plastic one at least...
Of course, once we’re finished the hunger will never return to its original form. Our solution would, therefore, be to invest in s’mores roasting forks. They are relatively cheap and can be found in many stores.

You’ll always be ready to make s’mores and better yet, you’ll save yourself the hassle of falling into a poison ivy bush scavenging for a stick.

Do Everything at Once

Most of us are so focussed on getting that marshmallow nice and crispy we forget about the chocolate. When the marshmallow is done we are left looking for the chocolate to whip it all together. A simple trick is to melt the chocolate while your marshmallow sits over the fire.
Put the chocolate on the graham cracker and place it near the fire.
Chocolate melts very easily so there’s no reason to go burning your hand. When your marshmallow is ready your chocolate should be melted and ready to create your delicious s’more.

Roasting Marshmallows Over The Fire vs Coal

A somewhat controversial topic in the s’more making business is deciding what the best method is for roasting your marshmallows. The classic stick it in the fire and blow it out is most common.

Although this technique allows you to get your marshmallow crispy in a few seconds it has a big drawback.
More than often you’re left with a marshmallow that is well done on the outside, but cold on the inside, we all want a warm s’more. A response to this would be putting it back into the fire until the inside turns warm and hope it doesn’t blacken on the outside.

The alternative, and perhaps better option is roasting the marshmallow over the coals.
Once the fire has settled, let the marshmallow simmer over the coals. The heat isn’t as intense and it will be able to cook the marshmallow thoroughly. You will be left with an outside golden like the sun, and an inside that’s warm to match.

Consider taking a minute to make your marshmallow, instead of a few seconds blowing out that sweet little fireball.

Take Safety Precautions

Creating delicious s’mores requires some precautions. You and possibly your children will be very close to the fire, and nothing would ruin the fun more than a burnt hand.

Even worse would be creating a forest fire and burning down the trees and local wildlife. The following safety tips can be used in order to always have a safe experience making s’mores:
  • Create your fire in a safe pit or fireplace: that means don’t make it in an open field or randomly on the ground. If you need to make your own fire surround it with rocks so the fire won’t spread.
  • Have water nearby: if for some reason the fire gets out of control, have water nearby to extinguish the fire.
  • Keep your ingredients/items away from the fire.
  • Supervise your children: most children are intrigued by fire and are bound to get closer. Make sure they’re at a safe distance, and if they’re making the s’mores themselves, they should be watched at all times.
  • Marshmallows are hot: it can be rather amusing when your marshmallow catches fire in the flame. Don't play with it as it might have dire consequences.

Different Types Of S’mores

Now it’s time for the fun part, figuring out how to make the perfect s’more and finding your preference. The classic s’more is made with 2 pieces of graham crack, a marshmallow, and a block of milk chocolate.

If this is all you’re accustomed to preparing yourself, it’s basically the equivalent of eating just ‘cheese pizza.’
Get your s’more forks ready, you’ve been missing out on a world of flavour!
  • Berry s’mores: earlier we spoke about s’mores coming out in summer, well so do berries. Combine some strawberries and raspberries to your melted marshmallow and chocolatey center for a fruity change to the classic.
  • Candy s’mores: Do you have a sweet tooth, but you’re not a fan of chocolate? No problem! When you’re about to make your s’more, replace the chocolate with your favorite candy. Add skittles or soft chewing sweets that you think might go nicely with the marshmallow center. Candy and chocolate can be added together to create an even sweeter mixture
  • Chocolate cookie s’mores: Graham crackers not your thing? Replace them with chocolate cookies and put your marshmallow inside. This saves on the chocolate inside and gives you a tasty biscuit flavor too.
  • Grilled banana s’mores: Swap the graham crackers for a banana and stuff the inside with chocolate chips and mini marshmallows. Roast the banana on the fire.
  • Nutella s’mores: Instead of using a block of chocolate, swap it for Nutella to create a nutty treat.
  • M&M s’mores: Fill a bowl with M&M’s, then pull your marshmallow over the campfire and wait till it’s nice and gooey. Put the marshmallow into the bowl and mix everything together. You can now equally proportion the mixture out.
  • Oreo s’mores: this idea requires a little more preparation but it’s certainly worth it. Remove the top cookie carefully, and leave the filling on the biscuit. Then place your marshmallow and chocolate inside for a much creamier Oreo / s’more infusion.
