How to Make Singapore Sling

One of the most loved cocktail is the Singapore sling that is served straight without ice cubes. Let us take a look at how to make this delicious cocktail.

Cocktail drinks are loved by one and all, and there are varieties of cocktails all around the world. A cocktail as the name suggests is a mixture of alcoholic and fruit juices and are served either straight or on the rocks. Bartenders around the world concoct different cocktails and give them exotic names. However, not all cocktails become popular.
Singapore Sling is a cocktail that is quite popular and it was created by a Chinese bartender from Raffles Hotel in Singapore named Ngiam Tong Boon. It was created in 1915, and is a very delicious tropical drink that uses Gin as its alcohol base.

Singapore Sling Recipe

The Singapore sling drink is a very delectable drink that is made with gin, cointreau, grenadine syrup, pineapple juice and cherry brandy. It has a very balanced flavor and the bitterness of the gin is nicely offset by the sweetness in the pineapple juice and the tartness of the grenadine syrup.
Ingredients
  • 1 ½ ounces gin
  • 4 ounces pineapple juice
  • ¼ ounce Cointreau liqueur
  • ⅓ ounce grenadine
  • ½ ounce Cherry brandy
  • ½ ounce lime juice
  • 1 drop Angostura bitters
  • ¼ ounce Benedictine Dom
Method
Shake all the ingredients together into a cocktail shaker along with a handful of ice cubes. Strain this cocktail into long Collins glasses and serve with a slice of fresh pineapple. You need to use the best brands of gin and cherry brandy to get the flavor of the original drink. Grenadine syrup that is used for making this cocktail is nothing but pomegranate syrup.
It gives the cocktail its vivid pink color as well as imparts a hint of tartness into it. As far as possible stick to this original recipe and use fresh pineapple juice and freshly squeezed lime juice in the recipe. Do not get tempted to vary the measurements for the ingredients or use sub standard ingredients. A drop of Angostura bitters gives this drink a hint of bitterness that balances the tartness and sweetness of the drink.

Quick Singapore Sling Cocktail

When you do not have the time to put together all the ingredients of the original Singapore sling recipe, then you need a cheats version of it.
Ingredients
  • 1 ounce gin
  • 1 ½ ounces Cherry brandy
  • 2 tablespoons sweet and sour mix
  • 1 ½ ounces grenadine syrup
  • Bottle of club soda
Method
In a long Collins glass, pour the grenadine syrup and then fill it with ice cubes. Pour the gin followed by equal parts of sweet and sour mix and the chilled club soda. Finish this by adding the cherry bandy on top and serve this party cocktail immediately.

Singapore Sling Dessert

This dessert recipe was concocted by Kevin Sbraga, a contestant from the cooking reality show Top Chef, as part of the elimination challenge.

Ingredients
  • 4 liters coconut milk
  • 200 grams sugar
  • 8 mangoes
  • 16 sheets gelatin, soaked
  • 200 ml gin
  • 8 kiwi
  • Juice of 10 limes
  • 2 pineapples, cut into chunks
  • 10 dragon fruit, hallowed out
  • 15 oranges, juice extracted
  • 2 cups fresh cherries, pitted
  • 1 vanilla bean, slit
Method
In a small saucepan, heat the coconut milk, sugar and vanilla bean and let it simmer for 5 minutes. Add the gelatin into the milk and then strain the milk mixture. Keep this aside. In an electric blender, whiz the gin, lime juice and orange juice along with the pineapple chunks and fresh pitted cherries, until you have a smooth mixture.
Freeze this mixture in the refrigerator and rake it with a fork after 2 hours to get granita. Clean the hollowed out dragon fruit and pour a bit of the milk mixture into it. Place all the dragon fruit filed with milk mixture in the refrigerator until the gelatin sets. Garnish the dessert with kiwi slices, mango chunks, pineapple chunks and cherries. Add a bit of the granita and serve cold.
