Self-Rising Flour Recipes

Self-rising flour is one of the easiest recipes to cook at home. They are delicious and can be prepared in a number of ways.
In most flour recipes, yeast is used to raise the flour but it is a time-consuming process and takes a lot of effort as the flour needs to be kept overnight, since yeast takes time to ferment. Wouldn't you prefer an easier and time saving procedure to make the flour rise?
You can make self-rising flour, it does not involve fermentation and takes an hour to bake. The secret ingredient for this self-rising flour is baking powder or sodium bicarbonate.

Self-Rising Flour

Ingredients
  • 5 cups, wheat flour
  • 2 tablespoons, salt
  • 2 tablespoons, baking powder
Directions
In a bowl, mix the wheat flour, salt, and baking powder thoroughly and your self-rising flour is ready to be used in any recipe.

Potato and Apple Delight

Ingredients
  • 3 potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons, butter
  • 2 cups, self-rising flour
  • 2 apples (peeled; chopped)
  • 2 tablespoons, icing sugar
  • 3 tablespoons, salt
Directions
Peel the potatoes, boil them in salt water and cover them with a cloth once the water is drained. In a bowl mash them with a beater and mix thoroughly. Add the flour and salt to the mixture and knead it.
Cut the dough into two halves and place the chopped apples on the open end of the first half. Then, place the other half of the dough on the first and pinch the edges together. Bake the cake for about 30 minutes at 350 ºF in a preheated oven, till the sides turn brown. Remove onto a serving dish and peel off the upper side of the cooked dough. 
Apply some butter to it and spread the apples, sprinkle some icing sugar on it. Place it back on the other half of the cake and garnish it with some more icing sugar.

Crisco Cookies

Ingredients
  • 5 cups, self-rising flour
  • 1 cup, Crisco
  • 1 cup, buttermilk
Directions
In a large mixing bowl, take the self-rising flour and mix it with Crisco shortening. Sift it well with a beater or a fork and add buttermilk. Do not use all the flour for this mixture.
When the dough becomes firm, sprinkle the remaining flour on a flat surface and place the dough on it. Knead it gently into a flat cake and cut out shapes of the dough. Bake the cookies for 15-20 minutes at about 350 ºF until they turn brown.

Banana Bread

Ingredients
  • 6 cups, self-rising flour
  • 3 tablespoons, butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 6 bananas
  • 1 teaspoon, salt
  • 2 tablespoons, oil
  • 2 cups, dried fruits
Directions
Take a large mixing bowl and add all the ingredients to it, other than the dried fruits. Mix these well and add them to a food processor.
After all the ingredients are completely mashed along with the bananas, add the dried fruits. Pour this mixture in a butter-coated bowl. Cover the top of the bowl and bake this mixture for 90 minutes at 350 ºF. Remove the cover after it is completely baked and serve your hot banana bread with icing sugar sprinkled on top.

Almond and Avocado Muffins

Ingredients
  • 1 cup, sugar
  • 2 cups, self-rising flour
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons, butter
  • 1 pureed avocado
  • 1 cup, almonds
  • 1 cup, milk
Directions
Prepare the muffin pans and preheat the oven to 400 ºF. In a mixing bowl, beat the egg, add butter and sugar which are blended together.
Now, blend in the avocado, almonds, and milk. Add the flour to this mixture and mix gently till it is soft and smooth. Place this in the muffin pans and sprinkle it with ground almonds. Bake it for 25 minutes till they turn crisp and brown.

Gluten Free Self-Rising Flour

Ingredients
  • 2 tbsp, potato flour
  • 3 tbsp, white rice flour
  • ½ tsp, bicarbonate soda
  • ½ tsp, cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp, xanthan gum or pre-gel starch
Directions
Mix all these ingredients in a large mixing bowl and you can use this gluten free self-rising flour to make any recipes. Gluten free foods are a must for people suffering from Celiac diseases.
