While sauteed onions and caramelized onion recipes are nearly the same, the former involves making a slightly crunchy texture from outside with a soft center. Whereas, caramelized onions are cooked till the onion slices turn brown.
In short, correct sauteing of onions is a healthier choice, in which you can conserve most of the nutrients. To get started, gather the required supplies - 4 medium onions, 2 tablespoons olive oil (or a mixture of butter and olive oil), salt and pepper for taste.
For preparation of onions, cut off the ends and peel the onion skin. Cut each onion into two halves, and make thin slices (1/8 inch). Heat olive oil (or olive oil and butter mix) in a pan over medium low heat. Add onions and cook slowly, while stirring in between.
If you are in a hurry, adjust your burner to medium high setting and cook, until onions become translucent and soft. If preferred, add salt, pepper and a dash of garlic powder for seasoning. Depending upon the heat setting, sauteing onions take about 5-15 minutes to get prepared.

Sauteed Onion Recipes

Sauteed onion recipe is perfect for both vegetarian and non-vegetarian eating. You can enjoy it alone or add it in sauces, baked potatoes, omelets, burgers, hotdogs, meat, etc. Indeed, these mildly sweet, fried onions simply convert a plain dish into something special that you will love to have anytime. The following are tasty food recipes that call for sauteed onions.

Sauteed Onions and Mushroom

Ingredients
  • 2 medium-sized yellow onions (or other sweet variety)
  • 1 pound fresh mushrooms
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • ½ tablespoon mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • Salt and pepper as per taste
Directions for Preparation
This is a great recipe for dinner. The soft mushrooms blend well with the rich fried onions to give a tasty treat. Prepare the onions first by peeling and making thin slices. Also, remove the stems of mushrooms and cut them into slices. Preheat a thick skillet over medium high heat setting and add olive oil.
While oil becomes hot, sauté onions. Stir and continue cooking till onions are lightly browned. Reduce heat and stir in mushroom slices. Add pepper and salt for seasoning. Cook the onions and mushrooms, until there is no moisture left. Add shredded cheese and garnish with your favorite herbs before serving. Or, use it for topping steaks and beef.

Sauteed Onions and Pepper

Ingredients
  • 6 large yellow onions
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • 2 red bell peppers, thinly sliced
  • 2 yellow bell peppers, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ¼ cup sherry vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon tomato puree
  • 1½ teaspoon chili flakes
  • Kosher salt to taste
  • A dash of freshly ground pepper
Directions for Preparation
First peel and halve the onions. Placing them in a chopping board, cut them to make thin, half round slices. Heat a large frying pan over medium high heat setting, and add oil. Add onion slices and sauté for 15-18 minutes, stirring occasionally. When you are done sauteing the onions, add minced garlic and cook for 2 minutes.
Stir in the remaining ingredients - pepper slices, vinegar, tomato puree, chili flakes, kosher salt and black pepper. Stir and cook for another 10 minutes, until the pepper turns soft and tender. Remove from heat and serve with sausages, hotdogs or brats.
