Red wine sangria is a popular fruit-based wine punch, that was created in Spain. During the 1964 World Fair, sangria became popular among the Americans. The word sangria comes from a Spanish word sangre. This means blood and therefore, red wine becomes the obvious choice for making this drink.
A basic red wine sangria consists of red wine, brandy, fruit juice, and a sweetener. Fruits like oranges, limes, or even blueberries can be used to prepare this concoction. It's a popular party punch that is fresh and fruity, and is perfect to beat the heat during the hot summer days. Let's find out how it's prepared.

Sangria with Brandy

Ingredients
  • 1 bottle red wine (preferably Rioja, Spain)
  • 2 ounces brandy or peach brandy
  • ¼ cup very hot water
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 3 oranges
  • 2 limes
  • 2 ounces orange liqueur, like Cointreau
  • Strawberries (optional)
Preparation
Dissolve the sugar in the hot water to prepare a sugar syrup. Allow this syrup to cool. Then, take a large pitcher and mix syrup, juice of 2 oranges, juice of 1 lime, brandy, and Cointreau. Now, cut the remaining orange and lime into thin slices and add them to the wine mixture.
You need to chill the wine for a few hours, so as to allow the flavors to blend well. Serve in a chilled wine glass. If desired, you can garnish with a strawberry. This recipe makes about 6-8 servings.

Sangria with Rum

Ingredients
  • 3 bottles of red wine (preferably Rioja, Spain)
  • 1½ cups of light rum
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 1 cup mango juice
  • Juice of 2 limes
  • 1 orange, peeled and roughly chopped
  • 1 can (12 oz.) of pineapple chunks with juice and all
  • 1 lemon, sliced
Preparation
Once the sugar syrup has been prepared and cooled, mix all the ingredients mentioned above in a large pitcher. Mix well. You need to chill the drink, so as to allow the flavors to blend well. After a few hours, your drink is ready to be served. You can serve your drink in a wine glass filled with ice. If desired, you can add a lime slice as garnish. This recipe makes about 20 to 24 servings.

Sangria with Ginger Punch

Ingredients
  • 2 oz. brandy (optional)
  • 2 bottles red wine
  • 8 oz. ginger ale
  • 4 oz. sugar syrup
  • 32 oz. club soda
  • Juice of 1 orange
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 6 thinly sliced orange and lemon sections for garnish
Preparation
You need to pre-chill all the ingredients overnight and then mix the red wine, brandy, fruit juices, and sugar syrup in a punch bowl. Add ice and mix well. If you want you can also add club soda and garnish with orange and lemon slices. This punch makes 24 servings.
