Prepared Mustard Recipes

Mustard is commonly used as a table condiment, which comes in jars and tubes. This story provides some recipes for making mustard at home.
Many a time, you might have come across the term 'prepared mustard', as one of the ingredients in food recipes. Even though mustard is commonly used in various forms, the term 'prepared mustard' may confuse you. It is nothing other than ground mustard seeds mixed with other ingredients, like water, wine, vinegar, beer, and juice. There is a wide range of prepared mustard types available in supermarkets. However, preparing it at home is very easy, provided, you know the right recipes.
There are various types of prepared mustard, which vary in flavor and intensity. The flavor and intensity are largely based on the type of mustard used and other ingredients. Even mustard seeds come in different varieties, and the basic ones are the white or yellow mustard, brown or Indian mustard, and black mustard.
While some have a sharp and hot flavor, some others have a mild, sweet and sharp taste. So, it is the type of mustard, other ingredients and the preparation method, that decides the flavor of the prepared mustard.
You may find different varieties of prepared mustard, like honey, Dijon, spicy brown, stone ground, horseradish, and the traditional yellow mustard. All of them contain mustard, which is blended with different ingredients.

Basic Yellow Mustard

Yellow mustard is one of the popular and common types of prepared mustard, which is mostly referred to as 'mustard'. This prepared mustard recipe includes turmeric as an ingredient, which gives the yellow color to the product.
In order to make a basic prepared mustard, you need four tablespoons each of dry mustard powder and vinegar, and ¼ teaspoon of turmeric. The preparation method is really easy, as all you have to do is to mix the ingredients. Take a stainless steel bowl, and whisk the ingredients thoroughly.
Keep it aside for at least 20 minutes, and then, transfer the mustard to a container with a lid. Refrigerate the prepared mustard, that can be used on sandwiches, hamburgers, and hotdogs.

Apple Cider Mustard

Ingredients
  • Yellow mustard seeds - ½ cup
  • Prepared mustard - ¼ cup
  • Brown mustard seeds - 1 tbsp.
  • Cider vinegar (apple cider vinegar) - ½ cup
  • Sweet cider - ⅓ cup
  • Hard dry apple cider / dry white wine - ½ cup
Directions to Prepare
Soak the mustard seeds for at least two hours and grind them in a blender. Combine all other ingredients thoroughly. Once they get mixed in an even manner, add the ground mustard seeds. Refrigerate the prepared mustard for at least two days before use. It can be used with smoked ham and cheddar cheese.

Honey Mustard

As the name suggests, honey mustard includes honey as an ingredient. Honey mustard is very popular as sandwich topping and as a dip for French fries, chicken strips, etc. The basic type can be made by mixing equal parts of mustard and honey, but there are many variations, that contain additional ingredients.
Ingredients
  • Kraft mayonnaise - ½ cup
  • Rice wine vinegar - 1 tbsp.
  • Dry mustard powder - ¼ cup
  • Honey - ¼ cup
  • Salt and cayenne pepper - 1 pinch each
All you have to do is to combine all the ingredients thoroughly and refrigerate.
