Licorice Recipe

Licorice is a sweet-flavored root of a plant, and is widely used for preparing various desserts and candies. This story gives you some delicious recipes.
Liquorice, also called licorice, is basically the root of a plant named Glycyrrhiza glabra. The sweet extract obtained from this root is also referred to as licorice. Thus, it is a confectionery extracted from the roots of this plant. This confectionery is used for preparing various sweets like chocolates and candies. Following are some of its gluten free recipes:

Black Licorice Candies

Ingredients
  • Butter, 1 cup
  • White Sugar, 2 cups
  • Milk, 1 can (14 oz.; sweetened and condensed)
  • Corn Syrup, 1 cup
  • Salt, ⅛ tsp.
  • Anise Extract, 1 tsp.
  • Black Paste Food Coloring
Procedure
To prepare it, first take a 9x9-inch baking dish with buttered foil. Then, in a large saucepan, place butter and melt it over medium heat. Add sugar, corn syrup, milk, and salt to it, and bring the mixture to the boil. Keep stirring the mixture until it boils, and then continue heating it but stop stirring.
Heat the mixture until it attains 242° F. Then remove it from heat, and add black food coloring and anise to it. Pour this liquid into the pan, and leave it to cool for several hours. Once it cools completely, remove the foil and cut it into required shape, with the help of a butter knife. You can wrap these pieces in waxed paper, as well.

Red Licorice Candies

Ingredients
  • Gelatin, 2 envelope (unflavored)
  • Cherry Gelatin, 3 packages
  • Cherry Soda, 4 cups
  • Anise Extract, 2 tsp.
Procedure
Take a small bowl and add both types of gelatin and ½ cup of cherry soda to it. Then pour the remaining cherry soda to saucepan, and dissolve the gelatin mixture in it. Once the gelatins get dissolved, add anise extract and pour the mixture into a 9x13-inch pan. Place the pan in the refrigerator. When set, cut it into required shape.

Licorice Wands

Ingredients
  • Almond Bark, 6 oz. (chopped)
  • Licorice Twists, 24
  • Candy Sprinkles
Procedure
Place the candy sprinkles in a microwavable measuring cup. Keep the cup uncovered and microwave it at a high level for about a minute. Keep stirring the liquid after every 15 seconds. Once the syrup melts completely, remove the bowl from oven, and dip each licorice twist into the candy syrup
. You can even sprinkle these, with candy decorations. Leave these wands for at least half an hour, until they set properly.

Licorice Tea

Ingredients
  • Water, 6 cups
  • Licorice Root, 2½ tsp. (dried)
  • Cinnamon Stick, 1
  • Peppermint, ½ cup (dried)
  • Honey, ½ cup
Procedure
Take a large pot and pour water into it. Keep the pot over high heat and bring the water to boil. Then, add licorice and cinnamon to the boiling water, and lower the heat to simmer the liquid. Then cover the pot partially, with a plate, and simmer it for 10 more minutes. Remove the pot from heat, and add peppermint to the liquid.
Cover the pot completely and let it steep for 10 minutes. Now, strain the tea and add honey to it. Let the tea cool completely, and then place the container to refrigerate. Serve with ice cubes.
