How to Make Sour Milk

  • Whole Milk
  • Vinegar

  • Pour the milk in a steel container and set it to room temperature.
  • Do not boil the whole milk, as that will not help in the process of acidification. For the addition of the vinegar, you will have to follow a ratio, where you can add 1 tablespoon of vinegar for 1 cup milk.
  • You can also use the same proportion of lime juice similarly, since this too has citric acid.
Thus, for a recipe where you need ½ cup sour milk, you can add ½ tablespoon of vinegar to the whole milk.
  • You can therefore, add the vinegar to whichever quantity of milk you need to turn sour. Stir the milk so that the vinegar is mixed well and after a few minutes you will observe the coagulation of the milk.

Using Sour Milk

Using sour milk for cooking and baking purposes is a very common practice right since ancient times. This is because it acts as a booster for making the preparations soft and fluffy and providing a rich flavor to them.
Whether the sour milk is produced by the addition of vinegar or bacterial culture, the function remains the same. Therefore, using homemade sour milk as a buttermilk substitute can be very helpful if you love baking cakes and cookies on a regular basis.

  • Cake shortening, ½ cup
  • Flour, 3 cups
  • Cocoa, ½ cup
  • Sugar, 2 cups
  • Eggs, 2
  • Sour milk, 2 cups
  • Baking soda, 2 tsp.
  • Vanilla, 1 tsp.
Directions
  • In a small mixing bowl, whisk the cake shortening and sugar together so that they are mixed well.
  • Then mix the flour, cocoa, and baking soda in another bowl and sift these together.
Mix the two ingredients with each other and the sour milk to the batter.
  • Whisk the whole batter so that it becomes smooth and fluffy. Grease a baking pan with butter, dust it with flour, and then pour the batter on it, settle it and bake the cake in a preheated oven for 45 minutes at 350 °F.
