How to Make Poached Eggs

Ratnashri Dutta
Poached eggs are those which have a firm and cooked egg white, and a runny yolk. This story lists the various methods for making these eggs perfectly.
Poached eggs are a very popular breakfast meal, and are eaten with buttered toast by many. But there are some people who are unable to make these eggs properly, failing to get that perfect yolk consistency or egg white firmness. Some good cooks agree that making these eggs is tricky but not very difficult, if the correct steps are known and followed.

Methods

In the past, you may have tried cooking these eggs in water with disappointing results, where the egg whites formed small balls and the yolk of the egg was left half done. A perfectly poached egg has a soft, yet firm egg white, encasing an intact runny yolk that does not have a raw smell or taste. Here are some simple steps on how to make these eggs in water, using a poacher, or a microwave, if you prefer.

In Water

This process is simple and does not take much time. The first thing that you have to do, is fill a medium-sized skillet with water to boil. Take the number of eggs you want, crack their shells, and keep them in egg cups. Once the water starts to boil, add some vinegar and salt to it.
The salt will increase the temperature of the water, and the vinegar will prevent the egg white from forming small globules in the water; instead, it will stick to the yolk, thus, giving you a well-poached egg.
Once the eggs are done, lift them carefully from the skillet, using a slotted spoon, and let the excess water drain out. Put them on buttered toast and enjoy your delicious breakfast.

Using a Poacher

Boil some water in a pan, crack the eggs, and place them in the cups of the egg poacher. As soon as the water starts boiling, lower the heat, and place the cups inside the poacher. Close the lid. After 3 minutes, turn the heat off and remove the cups. Using a spatula, place the eggs on a plate, and enjoy eating them.

In the Microwave

This process is not very difficult to perform if you know how to do it right. Take a microwave-safe bowl, pour some boiled water into it, add some vinegar to the water, and stir it well. Take an egg, crack it right in the center of the bowl and cover it. Keep the bowl in the microwave. Let it cook for at least 2 minutes, before taking it out. Serve.
Poaching eggs requires a bit of practice. You may not get it right in the first few tries, but you will soon get the hang of it and be able to make these eggs to perfection.
