How to Cook BBQ Ribs

Sheetal Mandora
For barbecuing ribs at home, the first thing you need to concentrate on is the marinade. Once you've got it right, it's all downhill from there. Read this story to find easy-to-follow instructions on cooking the perfect BBQ ribs.
Although there are numerous ways to prepare BBQ ribs, in my opinion and I'm sure a lot of you will agree, the best and only way to get tasty, juicy barbecue ribs is over a grill. To get that "melt-in-your mouth" tender meat, follow the instructions mentioned in this article.
But before we begin, let me just make this clear that the recipes are for beef and pork ribs. Also, in addition to the marinades mentioned in each recipe, there are couple more marinades you can try when you're grilling, parboiling, or baking the ribs.

For Juicy, Succulent Ribs

  • Prepare the ribs one day prior to making them.
  • Peel off the white membrane that's on the ribs.
  • Keep the ribs in a deep plate and cover them in your favorite BBQ marinade. The recipes of these marinades are given below.
  • Keep the ribs in the refrigerator and bring them out at the time of baking, grilling, or boiling it.
  • While baking the ribs in the oven, always place the ribs over some cookie sheets.

Preparing Ribs in the Oven

Marinade #1
  • Soy sauce, ¼ cup
  • Orange juice, 2 tablespoons
  • Brown sugar, 2 tablespoons
  • Tomato ketchup, 2 tablespoons
  • Olive oil, 2 tablespoons
  • Ginger, minced, 1 teaspoon
  • Orange peel, grated, 1 teaspoon
  • Scallions, thinly sliced, 1 bunch
  • Salt and pepper, for taste
Marinade #2

  • Soy sauce, 1 cup
  • Brown sugar, 1 cup
  • White vinegar, ½ cup
  • Water, ¾ cup
  • Garlic cloves, minced, ¾ cup
  • Ginger, minced, 1 tablespoon
  • Red pepper flakes, 1 teaspoon
  • Cayenne pepper, ½ teaspoon
Ingredients
  • Baby back ribs, 2 lbs.
  • Cilantro, chopped, ½ cup
  • Barbecue sauce (your choice)
  • Salt and pepper, for taste
Preparation
Follow the steps mentioned in the above section and marinate the ribs in a plastic Ziploc bag overnight. The next morning, take the ribs out, loosely wrap them in some foil, and preheat the oven at 350ºF. Place the ribs over the baking pan still wrapped in the foil and bake it for about an hour.
Turn the ribs once when they are cooking in the oven and baste with the leftover marinade. Once the ribs are cooked, drizzle some marinade (optional), barbecue sauce, salt and pepper, and freshly cut cilantro. Serve hot!

Preparing Ribs in a Crock Pot

Marinade #1
  • Soy sauce, ½ cup
  • Sugar, ⅓ cup
  • Sesame seeds, roasted, 2 tablespoons
  • Sherry, 3 tablespoons
  • Sesame oil, 2 tablespoons
  • Garlic cloves, minced, 2 tablespoons
  • Ginger, grated, ½ teaspoon
  • Scallions, chopped, 3

Marinade #2

  • White vinegar, ¼ cup
  • Olive oil, ¼ cup
  • Lemon juice, ¼ cup
  • Honey, 3 tablespoons
  • Cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper, 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic cloves, crushed, 4
Ingredients
  • Pork spareribs, 6 lbs.
  • Salt and black pepper, for taste
Preparation
Peel off the white membrane that's on the ribs and place them in the crock pot. Mix the marinade together and pour it over the ribs. Add a cup of water and slow cook the ribs on low heat for about 6 to 8 hours. Once the pork spareribs are ready, pull the meat with the help of a fork. Serve with some salads, crackers, by itself, or make it into a sandwich.
When you have the perfect marinade, and the meat has enough time to soak it up, all there's left to do is cook it over the barbecue grill.
