Homemade Icing Recipes

Though different types of icing are easily available in stores, homemade ones are always preferred. Here are some easy recipes to whip up some icing at home.
Icing is commonly used for decorating cakes. It seals in moisture, and enhances the flavor and texture of cakes. There are different types of icing, like buttercream, chocolate, cream cheese, royal icing, etc. The right icing must gel with the flavor of the cake. So, choose an icing that goes well with your cake. Here are some easy homemade icing recipes.

Easy Icing Recipes

This recipe can be prepared within a few minutes, if you have all the required ingredients. You need two cups of powdered sugar, three tablespoons of butter, half a teaspoon of vanilla extract, and two tablespoons of milk or water. All you need to do is to blend the ingredients thoroughly and refrigerate till use. Go for this icing, when you are in a hurry, and lack time to prepare other elaborate recipes.
Preparing ganache is also really simple. Boil 300 ml of cream. Remove it from heat, and add 600 grams of chopped chocolate. Combine well till the mixture gets smooth and free of lumps. You can use this ganache, when it cools completely. Heat it slightly before use, if the ganache gets hard.

Buttercream Icing

Buttercream icing is widely used for decorating cakes and cookies. Apart from being soft and sweet, it is easy to spread this icing, which can be prepared in different ways. The following is one of the simplest and easy recipes to prepare this icing.
Ingredients
  • Softened, unsalted butter - 1 cup
  • Confectioners' sugar - 3 cups
  • Whipping cream - 1 to 2 tablespoons
  • Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
How to Prepare
Process butter in the food processor for around 40 seconds. Add confectioners' sugar and run the processor on low speed till the contents blend well. Once done, increase the speed and blend for two to three minutes. Add vanilla extract and whipping cream. Run the machine for a minute. You may add more whipping cream to get the desired consistency. The blend must be smooth and fluffy, without any lumps. Your icing is ready for use.

Chocolate Icing

Ingredients
  • Softened, unsalted butter - 6 tablespoons
  • Powdered Sugar - 1 cup
  • Cocoa Powder - ½ cup
  • Milk - ⅓ cup
  • Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
How to Prepare
Beat the butter till it gets fluffy. You may use an electric beater for this purpose. Once done, add sugar and cocoa powder, along with vanilla extract and milk. Blend well, so that the mixture is free of lumps.
