Green Tomato Recipes

Green tomatoes are very good for the heart. They help in keeping this organ very healthy. Given in this story are recipes using this amazing fruit, that are delicious.
The thought of using green tomatoes may not appeal to everyone, as they are not ripe. But they are very good for health. They can be used in various recipes. Given below are recipes in which you can use both red, as well as green tomatoes.

Green Tomato Soup

Ingredients

  • Green tomatoes, 1 lb. (chopped)
  • Chicken broth, ½ cup
  • Scallions, 1 cup (thinly sliced)
  • Garlic, 1 clove(chopped)
  • Scrapped ginger, ½ tsp.
  • Ham, ½ cup (thinly sliced)
  • Extra virgin olive oil, 1 tbsp.
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Water, 1 cup

Directions

  • Heat oil in a saucepan, add ham, stir until lightly browned.
  • Add scallions, ginger, and garlic, and cook until an aroma begins to waft. 
  • Add green tomatoes, chicken broth, water, salt, and pepper, bring it to a boil, and let it simmer, until the tomatoes are tender. 
  • Season the soup with salt and pepper. Serve hot.

Green Tomato Salsa

Ingredients

  • Green tomatoes, ½ lb.
  • Red tomato, 1 (coarsely chopped)
  • Onion, 1 (diced)
  • Fresh lime juice, 1 tbsp.
  • Extra virgin olive oil, 1 tbsp.
  • Cilantro, 1 tbsp. (chopped)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  • Preheat the grill, brush onion sides lightly with olive oil, and sprinkle salt and pepper on it.
  • Grill the onion slices until they almost char.
  • Do the same for the green tomato slices too. Chop onion and green tomato coarsely, set aside in a large bowl. 
  • Stir in cilantro, chopped red tomatoes, lime juice, and the remaining olive oil. 
  • Mix it well and season with salt and pepper.

Fried Green Tomato

Ingredients

  • Green tomatoes, 2
  • Egg, 1
  • Milk, ¼ cup
  • Cornmeal, ¼ cup
  • All-purpose flour, ¼ cup
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Bread crumbs, ½ cup
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  • To make good use of your salsa dip, try this fried green tomatoes recipe. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs and milk.
  • Cut tomatoes in thick slices and coat it with flour. 
  • Dip tomato slices into the egg-milk consistency and then pat it on the breadcrumbs to completely coat. 
  • In a large skillet, heat oil on moderate heat. Place tomatoes into the frying pan in batches, making sure that they do not touch each other. Fry until both sides are golden brown, drain on paper towels, and serve hot.

Green Tomato Chutney

Ingredients

  • Green tomatoes, ½ pound
  • Onion, ½ cup (finely chopped)
  • Small apples, ½ cup
  • Pickling vinegar, ¼ gal.
  • Sugar, ¼ cup
  • Salt to taste

Directions

  • Thinly slice the tomatoes and sprinkle the salt.
  • Set aside and cover for 5-6 hours. 
  • In a sauce pan, boil together sugar and pickling vinegar, until sugar dissolves. 
  • Add in the apples, simmer for 10-15 minutes. 
  • Spoon in the salted tomatoes and onion, simmer for an hour, until the mixture becomes pulpy. 
  • Remove from heat, spoon into clean air tight jars.
One best ways to ensure that these recipes come out really well is to use fresh green tomatoes. Getting green tomatoes is easy as they are available round the year. And they are inexpensive, so one can use them for a variety of dishes and side meals.
