German Sausage Recipes

Sausages are known as 'wursts' in Germany and they are loved by young and old alike. Here are some yummy recipes that can be prepared with German sausages.
The word 'Sausage' comes from Latin word 'Salus', meaning preserved or salted. Sausages were prepared in order to preserve meat before the refrigerators were invented. A sausage is made of ground meat, spices, salt and animal fat encased in a natural or synthetic materials. Pork is the most popular meat but beef, chicken, lamb or turkey meat is also used.
Sausages are very popular in majority of European countries, but it is the Germans who have the longest tradition of making them. The traditional sausage is called Weisswurst, but there are many German sausages like Frankfurter, Cervelt, Bratwurst, etc. Several delicious dishes can be made with them. Let us look at some of them in the upcoming sections.

Sausage With Cheese

Ingredients:
  • Mayonnaise, 4 oz.
  • Sauerkraut, 16 oz.
  • German sausage, 16 oz.
  • Swiss cheese, shredded, 8 oz.
  • Potatoes, mashed, 4 cups
Preparation:
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

2. Wash and drain the sauerkraut thoroughly and keep it aside.

3. Chop the sausages into small pieces and put them in a large mixing bowl.

4. Add cheese, mayonnaise, sauerkraut, and mix well.
5. In another bowl, take mashed potatoes and blend with mayonnaise.

6. Take the sausage mixture in a baking pan and top it with potato and mayonnaise mixture.

7. Bake for half an hour and serve hot.

Sausage With Vegetables

Ingredients:
  • German link sausage, 16 oz.
  • Worcestershire sauce, 3 tsp.
  • A-1 steak sauce, 3 tsp.
  • Kitchen bouquet sauce, 1 tsp.
  • Black pepper, ½ tsp.
  • Water, 3 cups
  • Potatoes, 4
  • Onion, 1
Preparation:
1. Slice the sausage into round pieces and dice the onion and potatoes.

2. Take a small bowl of water and add black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, steak sauce and kitchen bouquet into it and set aside.

3. In a deep bottom pan, fry the sausages until they turn brown in color. Transfer the sausages into a plate and remove the excess grease.
4. In the same pan, take 1 cup of water and stir. Put in the sausages again and add potatoes and onions into it.

5. Pour water with spices into it and stir well, so that the seasonings get mixed thoroughly.

6. Add more water, if necessary, and cook on low heat by covering the pan till the vegetables turn tender.
7. Remember that you should not add salt to it.

8. Spread it on a serving bowl and match it with crusty bread for delicious results.

Sausage Salad

Ingredients:
  • Knackwurst or frankfurter sausage, 13 oz.
  • Spring onions, 4
  • Potatoes, 2
  • Olive oil, 3 tsp.
  • Chicken stock cubes, 2
  • Mayonnaise, 4 tbsp.
  • Cider vinegar, 3 tsp.
  • Mustard, 3 tbsp.
  • Yogurt, 2tbsp.
  • Fresh chives
Preparation:
1. Slice the sausages and the spring onions diagonally. Cut the potatoes and fresh chives into large pieces.

2. In a non-stick pan, heat olive oil and fry the sausages for 4-5 minutes on medium to low heat.


3. In a cooking pan, take some water and add salt to it. Put the potatoes into it and let it boil. Pour in the chicken stock cubes and stir.
4. Let it cook for 10-15 minutes on low flame. Take it off the flame and drain the water. Pour in cold water to cool it.

5. Put in the potato mixture and sausages in a salad bowl and mix well.

6. In another bowl, mix yogurt, mustard, vinegar, olive oil and mayonnaise and add to the salad bowl.

7. Garnish it with chopped chives and serve.
