German Chocolate Cake Recipes

You will be surprised to know that unlike what the name suggests, the term 'German chocolate cake' is actually derived from an American last name, German. In 1852, Sam German created a dark baking chocolate for an American company, Baker's Chocolate Co. The product was named after him, and was called Baker's German's Sweet Chocolate.

In 1957, the first recipe for German's chocolate cake was published in a Dallas newspaper. It included the Baker's German's Sweet Chocolate as the main ingredient. The recipe gained popularity and since then, the cake has been called, German chocolate cake.

Ingredients
For the cake

• 2¼ cups all-purpose flour
• 1½ cups granulated sugar
• 1½ teaspoons baking soda
• ¼ teaspoon salt
• 1 cup butter (softened)
• 1 cup sour cream
• 4 large eggs
• 4 ounces sweet baking chocolate (melted)
• ½ cup milk
• ¾ teaspoon vanilla extract

For the topping

• ¾ cup evaporated milk
• ½ cup brown sugar
• ½ cup butter
• 1 can coconut (flaked)
• 1 cup pecans (chopped)

Instructions

For the Cake

• Combine the flour, sugar, salt, butter, baking soda, sour cream, milk, chocolate, and vanilla in a large mixing bowl.
• Beat the ingredients with a mixer until blended.
• Now, switch the mixer speed to high and beat for another 2 minutes.
• Once done, pour the batter into an 8-inch cake pan by using a spoon.

• Preheat the oven to 350 °F, and bake the cake in it for about 35 minutes or until a cake tester inserted in its center comes out clean.
• Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool.

For the topping

• Add the evaporated milk, brown sugar, and butter to a saucepan and place it over a medium flame.
• When the mixture comes to a boil, remove the pan from the heat.
• Then, add the pecans and coconut to the mixture and set it aside to cool.

Once the cake has cooled, slice it horizontally, and place one layer of it on a cake platter. Spoon half of the topping on this layer. Place the other slice of the cake on it, and apply the remaining topping on the cake.

• 1 cup pecans (chopped)
• 1 cup coconut
• 1 package German chocolate cake mix
• 1 pound powdered sugar
• 8 ounces cream cheese (softened)
• ½ cup margarine (softened)

Instructions

• First, grease a 9x13-inch pan and sprinkle flour over it, evenly.
• Add the pecans and coconut to the pan.
• Follow the instructions on the box while preparing the cake mix.

• Once done, pour the mixture into the pan over the coconut and pecans.
• Mix the margarine, cream cheese, and sugar in a bowl, and drop spoonfuls of this mixture in the pan.
• Bake the cake in the oven at 350 °F for 45 minutes or until it is done.

• ¼ cup semisweet chocolate (chopped)
• ½ cup water
• 1 cup water
• 1 cup unsalted soft butter
• 1½ cups sugar
• 4 large egg yolks
• 4 large egg whites
• 2 cups flour

• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• ½ teaspoon salt
• 1 cup milk
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

• Preheat the oven to 200 °F. Melt the unsweetened and semisweet chocolate in ¼ cup of simmering water.
• Beat the butter and 1¼ cups of sugar together, until the mixture turns light and fluffy.
• Gradually add the melted chocolate along with the egg yolks (one at a time) to the previous mixture and blend them.

• Mix the baking soda, flour, baking powder, and salt together.
• Add this to the chocolate-butter mixture along with the vanilla extract and milk.
• Beat the egg whites with the remaining sugar in another bowl, and combine this mixture with the prepared batter.
• Pour it into a greased pan, and bake until a knife inserted into the middle comes out clean.

You can enjoy this cake with an ice cream of your choice or can combine it with different flavors of fudge and pudding, as well.
