French toast is a popular breakfast menu item. It is made with bread, eggs, milk, and syrups to enhance the taste. It is traditionally prepared as a sweet dish but there are some variations in which it is cooked using salt and spices. It is also known as the 'eggy bread' in certain places. The basic recipe has undergone several changes. Here are a few recipes, which can provide a variation from the ones that you have tried at home.

Baked French Toast

Ingredients
  • Eggs, 4
  • Milk, 1 cup
  • Salt, 2 tsp.
  • Butter, 3 cups (melted)
  • Bread, 6 slices
Preparation:
Beat the eggs and stir in the milk along with the salt. Next, pour this mixture into a flat and shallow pan. Now, you need to dip each slice of the bread in this mixture. You have to keep turning the slices so that both the sides absorb the mixture. Once it has absorbed the mixture, you need to place this on a buttered cookie sheet.
Use a generous helping of butter on the top of the bread slices. Bake them in the oven for 8 minutes at 500° F. Once done, turn the slices over. Bake again for 5 minutes. Once the slices are golden brown, your dish is ready to be served.

Fruity French Toast

Ingredients
  • Eggs, 5
  • Milk, ⅔ cup
  • Orange, 1 (finely grated)
  • Triple Sec, ⅓ cup
  • Cinnamon, 2 tsp.
  • Bread, 8 thick slices
  • Maple Syrup, for garnish
  • Fresh Berries, for garnish
  • Butter, for garnish
Preparation:
Beat the eggs and milk together. Add some Triple Sec along with orange zest and cinnamon. Whisk this mixture together, till it blends well. Once done, pour it into a shallow bowl. Now, you have to dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture. Let the bread soak up some of the mixture.
Take a skillet and melt some butter on it. This should be done on a medium heat. Add the slices of bread on this skillet and fry them until they turn golden brown on both the sides. Flip the bread when needed. Once you are done, serve these hot slices with dollops of butter, maple syrup, and some fresh berries as topping.

Apple Walnut French Toast

Ingredients
  • Cream Cheese, 8 oz.
  • Apple, 2 (peeled, quartered and cored)
  • Brown Sugar, 3 tbsp.
  • Walnuts, ⅔ cup (finely chopped)
  • Butter, 1½ tbsp.
  • Sugar, 1 cup
  • Eggs, 2
  • Applejack or Brandy, 1 tbsp.
  • Nutmeg, ⅛ tsp. (ground)
  • Cinnamon, ⅛ tsp. (ground)
  • Mace, ⅛ tsp. (ground)
  • Heavy Cream, ¼ cup
  • Brioche, 4 (¾ inch slices of sweet and light bread)
  • Lemon Juice, 2 tsp.
  • Fresh Mint Sprigs
Preparation:
Use a food processor that is fitted with a chopping blade. Mix the cream cheese, apple, walnut, and brown sugar in it. Puree it together. Let it rest in the refrigerator, till it's ready to be used.
Next, prepare the walnut brittle. For this, take a small saucepan and melt around ½ tbsp. butter over low heat. Add 2 tbsp. walnuts and 5 tbsp. sugar. Cook the mixture, by stirring it continuously. Wait until the sugar crystallizes, which should take approximately 10 minutes.
Now, remove this from the heat immediately, and pour this mixture over a baking sheet which is lightly greased. Let it cool down. Once cooled, break it into little pieces.
To prepare the French toast, you need to heat the oven to 350° F. Meanwhile, combine the eggs with ½ cup of heavy cream, nutmeg, cinnamon, applejack, mace, and the remaining walnuts. You need to soak the bread in this mixture, ensuring both sides are marinated equally.
Now, prepare the caramel sauce. Take a small saucepan and cook ½ cup of sugar with the lemon juice, on medium to low heat. Wait until the sugar turns golden. Then, reduce the heat slowly and add the remaining heavy cream. Mix it well. You need to keep this sauce warm over low heat.
Now, melt around ½ tbsp. butter in a large skillet. Add the slices of bread and cook till it turns golden brown. Flip both the sides. Once it's cooked, transfer the slices of bread onto a baking sheet. Cut this diagonally in half. Divide the cream cheese and spread it evenly over the slices.
Bake these slices for at least 10 minutes. While this is being done, you need to slice the remaining apple into quarters. Melt the remaining butter in the same skillet and cook the apple slices in it.
Pour the caramel sauce onto 2 plates and then place halved slices of the French toast on each plate. Top it with apple slices and sprinkle some walnut brittle over this. Garnish it with fresh mint sprigs.
