Dutch Oven Recipes

Rita Putatunda
A Dutch Oven, often just called a 'camp oven', is a cooking pot, usually made of cast iron with a snugly fitting lid. In British English, it is known as a 'casserole dish'.
Cooking in this vessel is popular among many people who are fond of stews, soups, roasted, and baked dishes. It is a cheaper option as compared to an oven or a microwave. They are ideal for slow-cooking. The old style of dutch ovens that are made of cast iron, can be used while cooking on a campfire to make pies, pizzas, breads, cakes, and biscuits. Let us look at some recipes that you can try on a dutch oven.

Stewed Beef

  • 3 lbs chuck roast (boned)
  • 1 lb carrots (thinly sliced)
  • 2 cans, stewed tomatoes (with onions and celery)
  • 2 cup, onion (sliced)

  • 3 tablespoons, flour
  • 1 tablespoon, oil
  • 1 teaspoon, pepper
  • 1 teaspoon, salt
  • 1 cup, water
  • ⅓ cup, molasses
  • ⅓ cup, white vinegar
  • ½ cup, raisin
Directions:

Heat the oil in the dutch oven. Coat the beef with the flour and brown it in the oil. Add the stewed tomatoes, sliced onion, pepper, salt, water, molasses, and vinegar; cover the lid. Let it cook for about 2 hours, or until tender. Then, put the rest of the ingredients into the oven and cook for another 30 minutes until the carrots are cooked. Remove the roast and break it into small shreds and put it back into the pan. Serve hot with rice.
