Cornbread Stuffing Recipes

Cornbread is a staple food in many places where wheat flour is overpriced. It is usually consumed with stuffing and can be baked, fried, or even steamed.
There are a number of ways on how to cornbread stuffing. Most stuffing recipes contain basic ingredients such as eggs, butter, and breadcrumbs. The ingredients vary according to the preparation method. Let us have a look at some unique and tasty recipes.

Basic Stuffing Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 can, cornmeal
  • 2 cups, milk
  • 4, eggs
  • 2, celery stalks (chopped)
  • 1, green pepper (chopped)
  • 2 cups, turkey broth
  • ½ stick, butter
  • 1 cup, onions (chopped)
  • ¼ cup, vegetable oil
Preparation

To a baking dish, add the can of cornmeal mix. Put 2 eggs, 1 cup of milk, and the oil, into this. Mix the ingredients well. Bake this mix at 375 °F for 25 minutes. Now, cut the baked bread into squares. Spread them out on a cookie sheet and bake again for 15 minutes. 
Put the baked bread pieces in a large mixing bowl. Add the remaining milk and eggs to it. Stir well. Now, put the turkey stock, celery, onions, and green pepper, into the bowl. Combine the mixture well. Pour it into a casserole dish. Bake the stuffing at 375 °F for 40 minutes, until it develops a crisp crust. Serve hot.

Stuffing with Sausage

Ingredients
  • 1 pound, fresh sausage (crumbled with casings removed)
  • 4, celery stalks (chopped)
  • ½ cup, butter
  • 1, onion (finely chopped)
  • Coarse salt and ground pepper, to taste
  • 4 cups, cornbread croutons (cut into 1-inch cubes)
  • 1 tablespoon, sage (crumbled)
  • 1 teaspoon, thyme leaves (finely chopped)
  • 2½ cups, chicken broth
  • 3, eggs (lightly beaten)
Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350 °F. In a large nonstick skillet, cook the sausages over medium heat, until brown. Place it in a large bowl.
  • Add the onion, celery, and a ¼ cup of water. into the same skillet. Heat this on a medium flame, stirring it with a wooden spoon, until all the vegetables become tender. Season with the salt and pepper. Add it to the sausage pieces in the bowl.
  • Add the bread, sage, and beaten eggs, to the sausage and vegetables. Boil the chicken broth in a small saucepan and pour ½ a cup of the boiled liquid over the prepared stuffing. If required, add more broth. Take care not to let the stuffing get too wet. Enjoy this with turkey, and serve warm.

Stuffing for Turkey

Ingredients
  • 7 slices, white bread (oven dried)
  • 3 cups, cornbread croutons
  • 2 sleeves, saltine crackers
  • 1, onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 cups ,celery (chopped)
  • 8 tablespoons, butter
  • 6 cups, chicken stock
  • 1 teaspoon, sage
  • 1 tablespoon, poultry seasoning
  • 5, eggs (beaten)
  • 1 teaspoon, salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 °F.
  2. Take a large bowl and add the bread croutons to it, dried white bread slices, and crackers. Set aside.
  • In a frying pan, melt the butter on a medium flame. Add the celery and onion, and let it cook for 5-10 minutes, until transparent.
  • Put the vegetables in the bowl with the bread mixture, and mix well. Add the salt, pepper, sage, and poultry seasoning, to taste. Then, add the beaten eggs, and mix well.
  • Pour this entire mixture into a greased baking pan. Bake until the dressing is cooked, which will take about 45 minutes.
  • Serve this stuffing as a side dish with turkey.

Gluten-Free Stuffing

Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon, olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon, fresh thyme (chopped)
  • 2 tablespoons, fresh sage (chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon, garlic (chopped)
  • 1 cup, onion (diced)
  • 1 cup, celery (diced)
  • 4 cups, gluten-free cornbread (diced)
  • 1 cup, gluten-free chicken broth
  • Sea salt and pepper, to taste
Preparation
  • Preheat the oven to 375 °F.
  • On a medium flame, grease a sauté pan with a thin layer of the olive oil.
  • Add the celery, onion, and garlic, to the pan. Stir-fry these ingredients for 3-5 minutes.
  • After the vegetables turn translucent, add the fresh sage and thyme to it, and let it cook for 2 minutes.
  • Add the salt and pepper according to your taste.
  • Add a cup of the chicken broth to this, and bring it to a boil.
  • In a large bowl, place the diced bread pieces.
  • Pour the mixture over the pieces, and mix everything together until well combined.
  • If required, you can add more salt and pepper.
  • Place this entire mixture in an oven-safe casserole dish, and bake it again for 30 minutes.
