Sheetal Mandora
Satisfy your sweet tooth with apples bathed in gooey caramel. Read this story to learn how to make caramel apples with our easy step-by-step guide.
Not only are caramel-coated apples fun to make, but they are divinely sinful to eat. Also known as taffy apples, the recipe almost always consists of dipping Fuji or Granny Smith apples in hot, melted caramel. The reason to use these two types of apples is for their tangy flavor mixed with the sweet caramel flavor.

Caramel-coated Apples with Assortments

Ingredients
  • Medium Fuji apples, 12
  • Chopsticks, 12
  • Dark brown sugar, 1 box, 1 lb.
  • Sweetened condensed milk, 1 can, 4 oz.
  • Unsalted butter, room temperature, 1 cup
  • Pure maple syrup, ⅓ cup
  • Dark corn syrup, ⅔ cup
  • Robust-flavored (dark) molasses, 1 teaspoon
  • Vanilla extract, ½ teaspoon
  • Salt, ¼ teaspoon
Procedure
In a non-stick pan, combine sugar, butter, condensed milk, maple syrup, corn syrup, vanilla, molasses, and salt together. Melt all the ingredients to make a thick paste. Using a wooden spoon, keep stirring continuously so that there are no sugar crystals formed at the bottom of the pan.
Place a thermometer in the pan and make sure that the temperature does not go beyond 236ºF. Once everything is dissolved, check the thickness of the caramel.
Take the pan off the heat and let the caramel cool down till it reaches 200ºF. Insert the chopsticks in each apple and keep it aside for dipping. Keep a bowl of nuts, candies, coconut flakes, or any other topping you like for coating.
Hold the apple by the chopstick, dip it in the hot caramel, swirl it around to coat evenly, and then in the assortments' cup. Place each apple on a platter and once it cools down, it's ready to be enjoyed.

Caramel-Cherry Almond Apples

Ingredients
  • Granny Smith apples, 6
  • Chopsticks, 6
  • Individually-wrapped caramel, 1 pack
  • Dried cherries, 1½ cups
  • Semisweet chocolate chips, 1 cup
  • Slivered almonds, 1 cup
  • Water, 2 tablespoons
  • Vanilla extract, ½ teaspoon
Procedure
Insert the chopsticks in the apples and place it on a cookie sheet. Take a double boiler and add the chocolate chips in it. Keep stirring continuously and melt the chips.
Meanwhile, in a different pan, unwrap the caramel pack and add it in with water (the amount will be written on the packet). Bring the mixture to a boil, as instructed, so that the caramel can melt properly. When the caramel melts, add the vanilla extract in. Keep an eye on the chocolate sauce as well. Once the chips melt, remove the pan off the stove.
Place a thermometer in the pan and don't let the temperature go beyond 236ºF. Take the caramel pan off the heat and let it cool down till it reaches 200ºF. Now dip the Granny Smith apples in the caramel sauce and coat evenly. Have a bowl ready with dried cherries and almonds for coating.
Swirl the caramel coated apples in each of the bowls. For the chocolate sauce, if it turns thick, then add some vegetable oil to turn it thin. Dip a spoon in the chocolate sauce and drizzle it over the apples. Chill the apples in the refrigerator till they are ready to be served.
