Blooming Onion Recipes

If you live to eat then you must be aware of the blooming onion dish. Many restaurant serve this aesthetically delicious dish to their customers. As the name suggests, a blooming onion is a dish where a large Vidalia onion is cut in order to look like a flower. If made in a traditional style, this dish can be really rich, filled with over 2,500 calories.

There is one restaurant which masters in making this dish - Outback Steakhouse. But many restaurants are following suit, preparing the magnificent blooming onion, and serving them as appetizer. Out of all the recipes, preparing this dish is exciting, it tastes delicious, is a bit tricky, and yet savory. Once you understand the technique which goes behind making this dish, then you won't be so apprehensive. Along with the main recipe, we have also included the dipping sauce recipe here.

• 1 cup All-purpose flour
• 1 egg
• 1½ teaspoons cayenne pepper
• 1 Vidalia onion
• 1 cup milk
• 1 teaspoon paprika

• ¾ cup vegetable oil, for frying
• ⅛ teaspoon cumin, ground
• ⅓ teaspoon dried oregano
• ⅛ teaspoon dried thyme
• Salt and black pepper, for taste

Ingredients for Dipping Sauce

• ⅛ teaspoon dried oregano
• ⅓ teaspoon paprika
• 1 tablespoon ketchup
• 2 tablespoons creamy horseradish sauce
• ½ cup mayonnaise
• ⅓ teaspoon cayenne pepper
• Salt and black pepper, for taste

• First we make the dipping sauce. Take a bowl to mix mayonnaise, horseradish, ketchup, salt, black pepper, paprika, oregano, and cayenne pepper properly. When the sauce is ready, keep it inside the refrigerator till you have to serve.

• Now we will make the batter. Take a bowl to beat the egg and then add milk to it. Take a different bowl to mix salt, black pepper, paprika, oregano, thyme, cumin, cayenne pepper, and flour together.

• Keep both bowls on the side and let's work on cutting the onion. Take 1'' off the top and bottom. Remove the skin and get a sharp knife to cut the onion.

• First make the cut in the middle of the onion but don't cut it all the way through. Leave at least ¼ from the bottom. Turn the onion and make another cut so that you would've made an 'X' on the onion.

• In the same way, stop at least ¼ from the bottom. Now make thinner slices with the knife, cutting the onion into smaller slices. You have to make as many cuts as you can without cutting the onion all the way through.

• Now with your fingers, spread the slices of the onion. Think of them as petals and separate them from the center. When the petals are separated, you will dip the entire onion in the egg-milk mixture you made earlier.

• After that coat the onion in the flour mixture. When you will fry the onion, this will give that fantastic coat to the onion and make it crispy.
• Do this a couple of times more so that there is a good coating on the onion. Keep the onion on a baking rack till you ready the oil for frying.

• Take a deep frying pan and heat the vegetable oil till it reaches about 350°F. Use the cooking thermometer to check the temperature. The oil has to be really hot to get that crispiness on the onion.

• Place the onion in the hot oil, very carefully. Fry the onion, keeping the bottom of the onion at the bottom of the pan. The onion should be submerged completely in order to cook properly.

• When all sides have turned golden brown, remove the bloomed, crispy onion and keep on a few paper towels. After a couple of minutes, open the petals slightly more and place on a platter.
• Get the dipping sauce from the refrigerator and serve the lovely, golden brown blooming onion.

Along with the dipping sauce, that was a delicious onion dish. You can also bake the onion which doesn't involve deep frying (at least, we can cut down on some calories, right).
