Beer Bread Recipe You've Never Thought Of

Marlene Alphonse
Beer bread is one of the easiest breads to make. It can be made with a variety of beers to give different flavors. Although, a percentage of alcohol evaporates during the baking process. Here are some great recipes for you to try at home.
The recipe for beer bread is simple and mainly requires only flour, beer, and sugar. The bread will be heavy and dense unless you use an additional leavening agent like yeast or baking soda. Overcooking the bread will result in a thicker crust.

Classic Recipe

Ingredients:
  • 3 cups self-rising flour
  • 1 can beer
  • ¼ cup butter (melted)
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
Preparation:
In a large bowl, blend the self-rising flour, beer, and sugar until there are no lumps. Grease a loaf pan with butter and pour the batter into it. Bake this mixture in a preheated oven at 350 ºF for about 30 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven, and brush melted butter on top. Tap the pan lightly at the bottom, your bread is ready if it makes a hollow sound; if not, bake it for another 10 minutes.

Italian Recipe

Ingredients:
  • 3 cups self-rising flour
  • 1 can beer
  • 2 tablespoons butter (softened)
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon shortening
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon dried Italian herbs
  • 3 tablespoons cornmeal
Preparation:
Take a large bowl and mix the flour, herbs, sugar, and cheese, and combine properly. Add the beer and blend the mixture until it forms a stiff batter. Grease a loaf tray with shortening and sprinkle some cornmeal. Transfer the batter to the pan and bake it in a preheated oven at 325 ºF for about 60 minutes.
Remove the bread from the oven, brush some butter and cornmeal on top, and allow it to cool before eating. You can serve this bread with dip or Italian salad.

With Whole Wheat Flour

Ingredients:
  • 1½ cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 can beer
  • 4½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1½ teaspoon salt
  • ⅓ cup packed brown sugar
Preparation:
In a large bowl, mix whole wheat flour, baking powder, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, and salt. Add the beer and stir the mixture until it forms a stiff batter. You can knead the dough with your hands to avoid lumps. Transfer to a greased loaf pan and bake in a preheated oven at 350 ºF for about 60 minutes. Insert a toothpick to check if the loaf is done; if it comes out clean, your bread is ready.

With Rye Flour

Ingredients:
  • 3¾ cups bread flour or all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup flat beer
  • 1¼ cups rye flour
  • 1 tablespoon butter or margarine
  • 5 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ cup warm water
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
  • 2 teaspoons salt
Preparation:
Take a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water, and leave undisturbed for five minutes. In a medium-sized saucepan, heat the butter, honey, and beer, and mix with the yeast, garlic powder, caraway seeds, and salt. Add the all-purpose and rye flour and knead into a smooth, soft dough.
Grease a round pan with butter and place the dough in it. Cover the pan and bake in a preheated oven at 350 ºF for about 30 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and allow the bread to cool down. Cut the bread into slices and serve it with some soup.
You can try different variations of beer bread. Add spices like onion powder, sage, oregano, or thyme to the dough and spice up your bread.
