Basic Sangria Recipe

Sangria is a drink that is native to Portugal and Spain. It consists mainly of wine, chopped fruits, sweeteners, and some brandy. This story provides the basic as well as improvised recipes of making this drink.
Sangria is a traditional fruit drink combined with wine. It was first introduced in Portugal and Spain and is drank the most during the summer season. People from all over the country popularized this drink by selling in restaurants and pubs on a large scale.
The basic recipe for this drink is prepared by combining assorted fruits (especially the citrus types), spices, sweeteners, soda, and a concoction of red wine. Today, this drink has become popular in different parts of the world, mainly in Argentina, Italy, Mexico, France, and Chile.

Basic Sangria

The following ingredients are required to make this fruit punch.
  • Wine: Red wine (Bordeaux, Rioja) and White wine.
  • Fruits: Lemon, Sweet lime, Orange, Berries, Grapes, Apple, Cranberries, and Pomegranate.
  • Herbs: Cinnamon, Ginger, and Orange peel.
  • Liquor: Vodka, Rum, Gin, and Fruity liquors.
  • Ice Cubes

Making this Drink

The basic recipe of this exotic drink is prepared by combining the aforementioned ingredients together to make different flavors. The authentic Spanish flavor is obtained by a blend of Rioja, citrus fruits, and soda. Given below is the recipe.
Ingredients
  • Wedged lime, 1
  • Wedged orange, 1
  • Wedged lemon, 1
  • Red wine (Rioja, Shiraz, etc)
  • Strawberries, 1 cup
  • Raspberries, 1 cup
  • Diced pineapples, 1 can
  • Orange juice splash
  • Lemonade splash
  • Ginger ale or soda, 4 cups
  • Gin, 2 shots (optional)
  • Sugar, 2 teaspoons
Preparation
  • Pour the wine into a large glass pitcher. Squeeze out the juice from the wedged fruits and mix this juice with the wine.
  • Now, add the wedged slices of the lemon, lime, orange, and pineapple to this mixture. Make sure the seeds have been removed.
  • Add the gin, sugar, and orange juice to the drink. Chill it overnight if you do not have ice cubes.
  • Add the berries, ginger ale, and ice cubes to the drink before serving it.

Improvised Recipes

These recipes are either blended with spices or with different kinds of fruits. A combination of vodka and rum adds to the flavor of the drink. The recipes are listed below.

Spicy Sangria

Ingredients
  • Orange, 1
  • Wedged lemon, 1
  • Wedged lime, 1
  • Rum, 1 shot
  • Red wine, 1 bottle
  • Jalapeno or Chili pepper, 1
  • Cholula Hot sauce, 2 tsp
  • Mango (diced), 1
  • Sugar or Honey, ½ cup
  • Citrus cola or Club soda, 2 cups
Preparation
  • Pour the red wine into a cup or pitcher and add the wedged fruits to it for preparing the basic drink.
  • Ensure that you have de-seeded the fruits before adding them.
  • Add the rum, hot sauce, Jalapeno or chili pepper, mango, and sweetener to the drink. Blend the mixture well and refrigerate it overnight.
  • Take it out the next day and add the rest of the citrus fruits to it.
  • Mix either the club soda or citrus cola with it. You can also add a few spoons of red wine to it.
  • Top the drink with ice cubes and serve it chilled.

Fruity Sangria

Ingredients
  • Red wine, 1 bottle
  • Wedged peach, 1
  • Wedged apple, 1
  • Wedged orange, 1
  • Wedged lime, 1
  • Wedged lemon, 1
  • Sliced strawberries, 1 cup
  • Sliced berries, ½ cup
  • Fruity brandy (peach, apricot, or berry), 2 shots
  • Lemonade/limeade, ½ cup
  • Diced pineapples, 2 pieces
Preparation
  • Remove the seeds from the fruits, squeeze out the juice.
  • Mix the wine with the fruit juice and then toss the wedged fruits into it. Add the strawberries, peaches, brandy, pineapples, limeade or lemonade to the mixture. Keep it in the refrigerator overnight.
  • Add the fruit brandy or ginger ale to the drink before serving it. Top it with ice cubes.

White Sangria

Ingredients
  • White wine (Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc), 1 bottle
  • Sliced lime, 1
  • Sliced lemon, 1
  • Sliced oranges, 3
  • Club Soda or ginger ale, ½ liter
  • White sugar, ⅔ cup
Preparation
  • Transfer the white wine into a pitcher and then mix the juice of the assorted fruits with it.
  • Then, add the de-seeded fruits to the mixture and keep it overnight for refrigeration.
  • Add the club soda or ginger ale and ice cubes to the drink before serving it.
